How appropriate is National Live Creative Day for voice over?!? Very!
According to http://nationaldaycalendar.com, we can “celebrate National Live Creative Day by taking the time to invent, discover and dream. Infusing creativity in our lives through a variety a media from painting and graphic art to music and gardening all have an impact on our lives. By expressing our passions and living creative lives, we experience the world.”
Voiceover Reality
Voiceover work is a passion. A lot of people think it’s just talking so anyone can do it, and/or they think you get rich doing it.
Yes, voice over is talking BUT what it is really bringing the words on a page to life. Yea, anyone can read out loud. Not everyone can do it so it is interesting and uses a tone appropriate to the story. And yes, some people have gotten rich doing it. In these days, that is less likely but potentially possible.
The reality is that it takes a lot of time, a lot of training, and a fair amount of money to get a voice over career going. It’s not instant success by any stretch. And anyone that says it is either got very, very lucky, or is lying through their teeth. My opinion of course.
Creative Passion
People pursue voice over for a lot of reasons. My reason, or one of them, is that I love performing. From a very young age, I was imitating every commercial on TV including the singing and dancing (to the ability I could). I’ve been in band and choir in school, in adult choirs as a member and occasional soloist. I’ve sung online in virtual bars (see http://secondlife.com).
According to my mother, I was pretty much outgoing after the first five minute, and for those five I was just in shock from being born.
I love doing different creative things. I’ve tried about every craft imaginable. I find it fun to learn how to do things and whether or not I’m great at them.
Voice over is more than that though. I have a passion to perform. I have a passion to have a successful business. And to be perfectly honest, I get a kick out of hearing my voice on someone’s website or whatever.
Conclusion
Now it’s your turn. Go do something creative today – doesn’t matter what. Pile the rocks in your driveway in a pretty pattern or welcome your spouse home with their name spelled out in the sand. Everyone has some creativity inside. Go find yours!
